80s and back again: a headboard's tale

This headboard hasn't been used in years.  In fact, it hasn't even been seen in years.  I believe it was held captive in the Mines of Moria and it had to fight a cave troll to return to its family.

Originally I was going to have Philly rip out the middle and help me add an upholstered section to the inside, but since I didn't want him to go all Snarly Bilbo on me, I decided just to paint it instead.

I lightly sanded and scrubbed it down, then gave it a coat of primer.  I'm using Annie Sloan, but after my difficulties with my quilt rack, I didn't want to chance it by not scuffing and priming first(The paint just really didn't grab onto that piece very well at all.)

I put on the first coat of ASCP Coco and let it dry. (Totally forgot to take pics.)

In the meantime, I thought I should scrape off the remains of the pumpkins that are still sitting on my front stoop from last fall.  Then again, they may still have a few good months left. Thoughts?

After the second coat dried, I painted the inside with Old White and did an Old White wash over the Coco. (Again, I forgot to take pics...but at least I remembered to take the ones that have absolutely nothing to do with the real content of this post.)

While that dried, I shaved my winter-hobbit feet and painted my nails fuchsia in a subversive attempt to bring on spring (sans rain).

my feet look green--they're really not

Kermit's feet really are green.
Holy mother of Gollum.

Are those bunions forming?  And little hammers on my poor little pinky toes?

What's Middle Earth coming to?

Just throw me into the fires of Mordor now.

Okay, since I wasn't boiled alive, I went ahead and coated the entire piece with Annie Sloan clear wax.

I can't believe I didn't take a picture prior to the wash.  The Coco really WAS brown!  After the wash it looks gray--completely different than what I was expecting.  (No, I wasn't organized enough to set up sample pieces like I should have...I just flew by the seat of my chainmail.)

Before and After:

I wasn't expecting a gray headboard, but since I've decided I like gray now, I'm going to leave it like this.  At least for now.

  2. Gorgeous!!!
AND I have bunions - disgusting big bunions - ( I don't have hammers on my pinkies - but that could be a good thing when redoing furniture you know - now if you could only form screwdrivers on your hands you'd be good to go LOL )
LOVE your blog Andi - you are absolutely hilarious!

  3. Oh my gosh! That turned out beautiful! I am so doing my headboard..but I'm cutting all the spindles off because there is no way I'm waxing all of those. I have hammer pinky toes too...and I'm lmao that you "shaved your feet"! You are so funny girl! Talented in both writing and furniture makeovers. Double major!

  4. I love your headboard! Beautiful! I have only touched up paint on furniture, I have never ever changed it (is that called refinishing?). I would love to do this with our coffee table in our family room, but I'm just a little too scared to for now. BTW, your toes look FINE (trust me, I've seen MUCH worse! lol!).

  7. First I thoroughly enjoyed the humor in your post. Second your feet do look a bit green, but nicely shaved and painted. Third I love the headboard in the gray. I have never used ASCP (SSH, I make my own!), but I would have figured that cocoa would be brown.
