what happens in the bedroom... {the farewell tour part 1}

...apparently goes on the blog for all the world the 7 of you to see.

Since we're getting our current home ready to sell, I thought it would be stupid embarrassing fun to show you how our house has...{ahem}...evolved over the past 14 years.  Please keep in mind that our house hasn't turned into a showpiece or anything, but I like to think I've at least made a few improvements over the years.

(If not, please let me know now before we finish the next house.)

If you've been following from way back, you know one of my earliest projects was to update the freaking old, ugly, hideous, ready-for-the-dumpster 80s furniture that has been gracing haunting our bedroom for...well...ever.

The dresser was successfully completed earlier this year; the chest of drawers has mocked me ever since.

It didn't think it was ever going to go under the knife.

It thought it was safe.

Nothing like the pressure of getting your house ready to sell to light a fire (not a burn pile--yet).

Remember this?

Now it looks like this:

The last time I felt this much relief was on a 5-hour car trip when Philly finally stopped to let me pee.

Philly ripped off the old drawer fronts and added the ones we made when we worked on the dresser.  I used some ho-made black chalk paint and waxed with Annie Sloan clear wax.  I LOVE that stuff!

So, I started taking pictures of the room for the house ad, and I thought it would be fun to show the different room iterations.  I went hunting for old pics.  I was successful in some rooms...others, not so much.

But I scored in the bedroom.  *wink*

This would be a good time for a shot of butterscotch schnapps.

Ready?

When Philly and I moved in and started decorating, he wanted a room where he could pick stuff out.  It was the bedroom.  (Trust me...the ones I "decorated" weren't any better.)

There's so much going on in that room.  I guess you call that country.  But it certainly wasn't cool.  Hang in there for just a sec while I scratch my eyes out.

Thank you.

Could I have any more CRAP on that dresser??  I admit, I was a bit of a pig growing up.  My sister can attest to that fact since we were forced to share a bedroom, and she was Little Miss Neaty Anita-kins.  And I was a slob.

As I get older, age, mature, close in on menopause... crap.  Oh hell.  The older I get, the more I despise clutter.  I don't know how I ever survived the mess.

Although, I have to say that medal hanging from the mirror...that's from the Chicago Marathon.  Yep...pretty darn proud of that one.

By the way, I think I'm going for a new record for words I cross out in a single post.

Okay, on to iteration #2.  I actually really liked this one and didn't want to change it.  Philly thought we should de-stripify the wall before selling the house.

See the nightmare stand peeking at you from next to the bed?

That's my dog, Fred.  My mom made him for me when I was a little girl, and he is always on the bed.  Sometimes he and Eddie take a nap together.

Surprisingly, I'm at a loss for words.

And finally.  The finale:

I bought that comforter set a long time ago on super-duper clearance, and surprisingly, I still like it.

What do you think?

I think we've come a long way, baby.

Stay tuned for upcoming episodes of {the farewell tour}.

It's only going to get worse from here.

    1. Isn't Fred the BEST?? He is so well-loved...my mom has patched him up several time because he's become so threadbare. Coolest stuffed dog ever. I think my Mom gave me the pattern...I might have to try and make another one someday. None will ever replace Fred tho... :)

  7. It's amazing how much you have simplified the room over the years and how bigger the room looks. I wonder, tough, what you have done with the rocking chair that used to be in your bedroom (I have an unexplained "thing" for rocking chairs). The chest make over is absolutely stunning.

  8. It' looks great Andi! OK...all I heard was Butterscotch Schnapps. Nah..really..I'm the same way..used to be a slob...now I'm bordering on compulsively neat. But selling a house makes me crazy. The last time we sold a house we just moved into our rental property so the house could stay picture perfect while it was for sale.

  9. Nothin like getting that house ready to sell to motivate you to redecorate. It looks great. Being a Little Miss Neaty Anita-Kins myself I love the uncluttered openness of the room now and the colors are so soothing. Prospective buyers will love the feel. Your furniture looks gorgeous! At least you get to take that part with you. You are taking it right? I have to say though, that my favorite part is Eddie and your stuffed dog. That made me smile and have warm fuzzies. I could sleep there.

  10. OMG! We were decorating TWINS in the 80's! Only instead of blue my choice was mauve. :P I had similar gold framed antique looking art, silk flower swags, quilt rack, and lots of clutter. Seriously, even the style of 1/2 wall painted one color with a floral border was EXACTLY what my house had! We had all "early married" furniture, which meant nothing matched, but looking at your photos was like a stroll down memory lane!

I love what you and Philly did with the dressers. WHAT an amazing renovation! Can't wait to see the rest.

  13. I've been reading your blog for awhile but just noticed that your bedroom is laid out exactly like mine, and almost the same furniture too. Except your closet is probably bigger. I like the changes you have made over the years. Mine is still stuck in the 70's, but I don't think I'm too lazy to update them, I think I'm insuring there will be antiques in the future. lol

  14. Anyone who decorated in the 80's understands. There is no excuse however for Eddie.
